A treat to avoid: Chicken Jerky

posted in Dog Community, Dog Safety |

By now you are checking treat packages to see if the dreaded “Made in China” line is there and placing it back on the shelf if it is.

In September, the FDA issued a warning specifically about chicken jerky products imported from China. Yesterday, they issued another, and now Australians are issuing the same warnings. An Australian university (The University of Sydney) is even investigating the association between the products and dogs becoming ill or dying.

According to the FDA report, these are the symptoms to watch for:

  • decreased appetite, although some may continue to consume the treats to the exclusion of other foods;
  • decreased activity;
  • vomiting;
  • diarrhea, sometimes with blood;
  • and increased water consumption and/or increased urination.

You can read the FDA report here.

So in this season of treats, be sure to check that the ones you are giving are safe. Avoid chicken jerky made in China and check labels to see whether they are imported from countries producing safe food, or even better, made in the USA. (Give the local economy a treat!)
