From Non-Sporting to Companion

French Bulldogs could be in a newly named group next year: the Companion Group.

Progress is being made with the group realignment report submitted earlier this year. The report suggests moving from seven groups to ten and renaming a few groups. Non-Sporting is one of the groups suggested for renaming. From the report:

We also chose to rename the Non-Sporting Group, since in fact it is (in addition to non-sporting) a non-hound, non-working, non-terrier, non-toy and non-herding group. After struggling with an appropriate name, we selected the Companion Group as the “new” name for this group.

Have to agree, this is a much more suitable name for the group, and especially Frenchies!

The realignment is not official yet. In January 2009, the report will go before the AKC Board where it will be considered for implementation. You have till Jan 2009 to make any comments on the report or a move to implement the realignment.

To make your voice heard, contact James Crowley below, or contact your breed parent club. (That would be FBDCA for Frenchies.)
