New breed recognized just in time for Crufts

A new breed is being recognized by the British Kennel Club: the Werewolf.

Werewolf in competition

This often maligned breed is finally obtaining official recognition. It will be interesting to see this breed compete in the ring. Let’s hope there isn’t a full moon for Crufts!

The literate Frenchie

Did you know your Frenchie can write letters? He can by using the Frenchie power of subtle persuasion. The same unexplained impulse you have to get him that tempting treat can also be used to make you write an important letter.

By appealing to the folks who care so much for them, a Frenchie can make people write the letters they wish they could. (If only that opposable dew claw was a bit more flexible…) A letter so important, it could mean the difference between a particular Frenchie’s life and possibly others. He doesn’t want to see a fellow Frenchie fall back into the hands of a known animal abuser, and your Frenchie knows you don’t either.

Spend a few minutes with a piece of paper, a pen, and a stamp, and keep a Frenchie named Sally Jane out of the hands of a known puppy miller.

Read Sally Jane’s full story, and how to write and where to send this important letter, at the French Bulldog Rescue Network’s blog.

A must see show about dogs

Missed Part 1, but got to see Part 2 last night of “Dogs That Changed the World.” A very interesting special on PBS about the development of the domesticated dog from the wolf. Missed Part 1: “The Rise of the Dog,” but caught Part 2: “Dogs by Design.”

Your local PBS station may still air the second part this week, so check your listings:
Air date schedule for PBS

Check out the weblink for the show. Lots of info and interactive fun. See snippets of the show and just how your snoozy pal is hardwired for action.
Nature: Dog

Just one very interesting finding is the correlation between coat color and the amount of adrenaline produced. Melanin (pigment cells) are chemically linked to adrenaline, the “fight or flight” hormone. As melanin development is delayed, so is the amount of adrenaline. This suggestion is based on a study with silver foxes. The study found, as the foxes became more domesticated through selective breeding for friendliness to humans, black and white patches appeared on their coat. Look for “Coat.” It’s the next to last slide.

Sit. Stay. Stay. Stay. Click!

This header caught our eye this morning in the local paper, The Austin American-Statesman. Not only is the article about how to take great photos of pets, it HAS a great photo of a Frenchie laying on top of a cement pig, and (of course) it made the front page!

The article was written by Sandra Eckstein and originally published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on 01/06/08.

Good photos of pet require patient hand

Lots of really good info and tips on how to capture your pet’s personality with a camera. Don’t be surprised if after reading the article, you’ll want to whip out that camera and start snapping away. :-)
